Wetang’ula Slips and Falls at Church Fundraiser in Bungoma

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula had a brief scare on Sunday, October 4, 2026, after slipping and falling while approaching the podium during a church fundraiser at St Peter’s Mungore ACK Church in Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County.

The incident happened as Wetang’ula moved towards the podium after President William Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet, invited him to address the gathering. In footage circulating online, the Speaker appears to lose his footing as he approaches the stage and falls forward.

Kibet was quick to react, moving towards Wetang’ula and helping prevent the fall from becoming more serious. Two other men also rushed to assist, and the Speaker was helped back onto his feet.

After the incident, Wetang’ula appeared to compose himself, dusted off his clothes and straightened his glasses before continuing with the programme. Reports also indicate that he held his right upper arm briefly, although there has been no official report confirming that he sustained any injury.

The moment quickly attracted attention online, with the video generating a mixture of concern, humour and political commentary from Kenyans. Some social-media users linked the incident to the approaching 2027 General Election and Wetang’ula’s active political engagements, although such interpretations remain speculation.

The fundraiser brought together several political leaders from Western Kenya. Wetang’ula has been increasingly involved in political mobilisation in the region as discussions surrounding the 2027 elections gather momentum.

Despite the unexpected fall, the Speaker continued participating in the event, with the gathering proceeding after the brief interruption.

Wetang’ula has served as Speaker of the National Assembly since his election to the position in September 2022. Before becoming Speaker, he served as Bungoma Senator and previously represented Sirisia Constituency in the National Assembly.

Olduvai NewsNet will continue to monitor the story for any official information regarding the incident from the speaker.
