TWO KILLED AT NAKURU RAILWAY BRIDGE AS SAFETY CONCERNS RESURFACE

Nakuru, October 7, 2026 — Two people have been killed in a morning road accident at the Railway Bridge along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, once again putting the spotlight on the long-running safety concerns surrounding the busy section.

The victims were reportedly knocked down by a trailer after alighting from a matatu near Medical Junction and proceeding on foot. Initial reports identified one of the deceased as a pupil from St. Joseph Primary School, while the other was reported to be a boda boda rider. One of the victims was reportedly trapped in the wreckage as emergency responders arrived. A suspected brake failure was among the early explanations for the crash, although authorities had not confirmed the exact cause by the time of initial reporting. The accident also caused a major traffic snarl on the highway.

Today's tragedy has revived questions over pedestrian safety at the Railway Bridge, an area that residents have previously described as dangerous because pedestrians, matatus and heavy commercial vehicles converge along the busy highway.

The concerns are not new. In June 2020, heavy rains caused the railway underpass section of the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway to flood, leaving motorists stranded and at least one vehicle submerged.

The wider Nakuru area has also experienced other serious infrastructure-related incidents. In March 2011, a footbridge at the roundabout connecting Geoffrey Kamau Highway and Mburu Gichua Road collapsed after being struck by an oversized-load truck. Engineers declared the bridge unsafe and it was subsequently demolished. The bridge had been constructed to help pedestrians cross safely at the busy section, which serves people travelling to major hospitals and other facilities in Nakuru.
