MURDER SUSPECT ARRESTED MONTHS AFTER FATAL GARAMA ROBBERY IN GARISSA
GARISSA, KENYA — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Garissa have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of the fatal robbery and stabbing of US national Osman Aweys Abdi in Garissa County.
The incident occurred on May 28, 2026, near Abubeida School in Bulla Mzuri, approximately five kilometres north of Iftin Police Station. Osman was allegedly attacked and sustained a stab wound to his left thigh before being struck on the left side of his head with a blunt object. His mobile phone was also stolen during the attack.
Osman's brother was alerted by a well-wisher who had obtained his contact from the victim. He rushed to the scene and found his brother in pain before taking him to Antalya Hospital. However, Osman was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was later transferred to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital pending a postmortem examination, as DCI detectives launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The suspect, identified as Muhiyadin Abdi Sheikh, reportedly went into hiding following the incident. Detectives mounted an intelligence-led operation to trace him and, after months of pursuit, tracked him down to a hideout in Kabete, Nairobi, where he was arrested.
Muhiyadin is currently being held at Kasarani Police Station pending his transfer to Garissa, where he is expected to face murder charges.
The arrest brings to an end months of efforts by detectives to locate the suspect, with the DCI warning that going into hiding does not shield suspects from the law.
