President William Ruto has commissioned the KSh1.47 billion Mwala Cluster Water Supply Project in Machakos County, marking a major step towards addressing decades of water scarcity in the region.
The project has a supply capacity of 6.6 million litres of water per day, providing reliable access to clean water for an estimated 137,400 people and 10 institutions across 10 towns.
The project is expected to ease the burden on residents who have for years faced challenges accessing reliable and safe water for domestic use and other activities.
A second phase of the project, estimated at KSh500 million, will focus on a last-mile water distribution programme aimed at extending the supply to an additional 120,000 residents in Mwala Constituency.
The project is expected to improve access to clean and reliable water while supporting households, institutions and economic activities across the constituency.
The commissioning forms part of ongoing efforts to expand water infrastructure and improve access to essential services in water-stressed areas of the country.
